20 DEC 2002: lsf62@yahoo.com
I did a very dumb thing, I was researching my great grandmother, Nellie Deforest Schutte born in 1884 in the Utica NY area, and found her father, Harry Deforest born in 1860, also in NY, her mother Sarah Peek. I had a web site up that connecting Harry all the way back to Melchoir Deforest. I e-mailed myself the site and lost it! I have since had a crash and can't seem to get back this information. I would be so grateful if any one "out there" could fill in the blanks for me. The NY state census leads me to believe that Harry's father was David Deforest born in1826 and his mother was Nancy. From further census studies it seems David's father was also David Deforest and Jerusia. Help!!! Thank you so much, Lori Flaherty

I am searching for information on my Great-Grandparents. Roelf Brinkema and Katie DEVOOGD Brinkema emigrated to the U.S.A. in June 1881. They settled first in Iowa and later moved to Nebraska for the remainder of their lives. Family Tree Maker CD # 269, Dutch to America lists a Roelf Brinkema of Bellingwolde-Groningen, Holland emigrating in 1881 at the age of 44. This misses his stated date of birth by two years, 46.
To my knowledge, Roelf and Katie Brinkema brought only 3 children with them on the voyage, however this CD lists 6 children, perhaps nieces or nephews. His occupation is listed as Dagloner (what does that mean?) and of less-well-to-do class or "middling".
Can anyone lead me in a direction so that I may verify this information and indeed prove that this is my G-G Grandfather?
    Thanks and Happy Holidays.

I am searching for Gottlieb Heinz - born 1853 in Wuertemberg (?) and came to NY in 1871. When he married in 1880 in Weyauwega, Wisconsin he said his parents were John and Laura Heinz (although Heinz was spelled four different ways on that document alone- that is how it was spelled thereafter). A sister was listed on his obituary as living in Oregon- no name was given. Oldest daughter was named Margaret and oldest son (my grandfather) was named Frank, Jr (he took the name Frank instead of Gottlieb).
Any information on this illusive family would be greatly appreciated!

Our great grandfather John Bernard Kohls, born 1830, arrived from Oldenburg, Germany abt. 1848. He became a US citizen in 1854, Covington, KY. He married Mary Elizabeth Lang(e) also from Germany in 1852. She arrived in US in 1838. John Bernard has his name on his Naturalization Decree as Barney Ko--(not sure)s. We know his name was in fact spelled Kohls, until early 1900's when the "s" was dropped from Kohls. I have his original Nat. papers.
He signed all papers we have as John B. Kohls, including civil war papers from Covington, KY, 1861. He had at least one brother. His name was Henry Kohls. We have his fathers name as Herman Kohls born 1805, Germany.
We would like more information on John B. Kohls and wife Mary Elizabeth Lang(e) and their families. We are not sure which port of entry they arrived at on the above stated years or their migration paths in US. We have them in Indiana for sure, MO, and later AZ for sure. Cannot find them on many Census. Did the Germans cooperate with the Census takers well?
John B. was later a member of the Masonic Lodge. ANY help with this would be enormously appreciated.

We recently returned from Aurich Friesland, looking for info in Christian and Frauke Jurgens. Unfortunately, we went on a Thursday, and Friday is the only day that the Lutheran Pastor can give information. Also, the cemetary was no help. We went to the court house, and were able to find the date that they registered for their marriage in 1867. We tried getting information on Christian's parents, Jurgen Jurgens and Helena Taletta Mohlmann Jurgens, but weren't able to locate anything. I sent an e-mail to the address upstalsboom@gmx.de that I was given by the lady at the court house, but haven't heard back.
Any help you can give, would be appreciated.

I am looking for my ancestors from Ostfriesland. Many of them came to Northwest Illinois in the late 1800's. Specifically I am looking for -

We have been searching for the family of my grandfathers brother, Lubbe Gerdes, born 11-14-1835 in Aurich-Oldendorf. The rest of the family immigrated to the USA. Lubbe is of course with the umlat for the U. We know that Lubbe was an organ repairman and a musician, family lore has it he repaired the organ in the Kaiser's church. One of my uncles went to Germany in the 1920's and I remember a book of music composed by a Siegfried Gerdes, a son of Lubbe. Over the years everything has been lost but the above address, could anyone tell me the name of the city so that I could search telephone recordst to see if there are Gerdes in that area' Help would be appreciated. gerald

Hello, I am still trying to find the birthplace of my 3 x great grandfather. He was George Claassen, I think he was born about 1794 possibly in Ostfriesland. He emigrated to England in 1825 with his wife Anna Catherina Korte following him to England the following year with their first born Gottfried. They then had Anna Catherina, Carel, Elizabeth, Henrietta and Louisa. All the children except Henrietta are shown on the 1841 UK Census. Anna Catherina died in October 1841and George remarried and had four more children. In the 1851 Census Anna Catherina was married, Louisa was the only child from the first marriage on the Census. The others I have been unable to find. Sorry to ramble on so much but I have been looking for George's birthplace for nearly 13 years so would be grateful for any help you can give me. Janet

Hello, my name is Petra Messbacher and I try to find some traces of my grandmothers grandfather, named Franz Adelhard. A few facts I know: He went to America in 1890 (that time) to Lincoln Nebraska. He left my pregnant grand-grand-mother in the region of Bamberg (south-Germany). It is known that he came by ship from Bremen to America and then must have married a woman from England. It is told that either had four sons or four children. He still must have lived in the 1920s in Lincoln or surrounding. So I'm interessted in all stories of ADELHARDS in Nebraska. Please contact me. Our Elusive one is Annie we just have had no luck what so ever in finding out when she Immigrated all we know for sure is that it was before her parents who came over in 1886, that she was at one time in German Twp. Ogle County when she first came over but was in Iowa by 1890. We are pretty sure she immigrated with brothers Herbert, Jacob I think that their parents sent them over with a relative who was coming.

We know that our great grandfather Cassen Meenken SANDERSFELD b. 8-24-1875, was the only one in his family that came to the United States in the late 1800's. He eventually settled in the Gage County, Nebraska area. He was the oldest of six children of Meenke CaBen SANDERSFELD b. 12-5-1836, and Gesche Heyen GARRELS b. 6-15-1847. There were twins Heye Meenken and Jann Meenken b. 5-4-1877. They also had a sister Antje Meenken b. 8-27-1887 d. 3-18-1891. Some of her family names include MEINTS, SCHUSTER LUBINUS, LUDECKE, ZIMMERMAN, MENNEN, FRERICHS. Thank you everyone for any help you might be able to give us.

My great grandfather was named Frank or Franz GIESKE. Research so far indicates that he was born March 29, 1840 in Horsten, Malgartan in the Kingdom of Hannover. he came to the USA about 1866 (about the same time that Prussia annexed Hannover). He first settled in Covington, Kentucky where he married Elizabeth Broerman about 1868. Their first child was born there. By 1872 they were living in Cincinnati where the other five childred (including by own grandfather, William Gieske) was born. After that date we have fairly good records up to the present time. Now, we would like to prove his birth in the town indicated and, if possible, take his ancestry back as far as possible.
I read on your web site about the existence of an Ortssippenbuch dealing with Horsten (1682-1900) Band 13. and thought it might be of value to me. Could you tell me if my ancesters appear in it? If so, I would definitely like to buy a copy, if one is still available.
Thank you for any help you can give me in this matter.

Hallo, I am looking for two brothers, who emigrated to the USA: Ihnke Eiben (born 18.1.1814) and Friedrich (born 31.1.1827) Lütjens in Reitzburg/Burhafe/Wittmund. Their father Ihnke Eiben Meents changed his surname to Lütjens. It is said, that the two brothers fought on different sides during the Civil War.We have some photos made in Peoria, Chatsworth and Fairbury, Illinois. I found a farmer in this region, called Lutjens, who can only remember his grandfather Ulrich. But I am convinced from the photos, that there must be some more Lutjens. There must have been a rich American Luitjens of Dutch origin, who died without heir in the middle of the 19.th century, so some of the Lütjens changed their name to Luitjens. For any information thank you.

I am seeking information on my grandfather, Friedrick Wilhelm Heinrich August Carl Schleehauf who was born in Wilhelmshaven on March 24 th 1891. I am also seeking further information on his parents. From naturalisation papers I have found his father's name to be August Schleehauf. It is believed his mother's maiden name was ARNOLD and that she may have originated from the Friesischian Islands. My great grandfather, August was a German Naval Officer involved in flying Zeppelin Airships from Lake Constance at Friedrickshaven. My grandfather, Friedrick is believed to have attended the University of Leipzig where he became proficient in building in steel concrete and timber. He also joined the German Navy but was later discharged due to injuries he received during his service. He departed Germany and sailed to Australia on board the LOTHRINGEN, arriving at the port of Brisbane on April 6th,1914. Friedrick had one brother, Adolph who later joined the Foreign Legion. He served under the name of Lieutenant Danne and was killed in Africa whilst serving with this unit. There were also two sisters, Meta and Marie. They both emigrated to America and Marie is supposed to have married a pastry chef by the name of Paul Kampie. I have no further information on this branch of the family and greatly appreciate any assistance in this matter. I have no objections in being contacted via my E-mail or by telephone here in Australia. My phone number is 07 46987820.
Yours faithfully
Geoff Schleehauf

Hi! My great-grandfather Koene Block born in Emden, 1/15/1834, married Elsie Reck or Rech, and they had 4 children: John, George born 8/28/1865, Lucy (my Grandmother) born 12/24/1869, and Charlotte born 6/18/1874. Their mother apparently died in Germany, and they all immigrated except I have no information on John.
George immigrated and settled in Sibley, Ia. where his father and sister, Charlotte joined him in about 1894 or 1895. Lucy immigrated with her husband Herman Viet in 1891 and settled first in Freeport, Il.
George and his father Koene moved to DeSmet, S.D. in 1901, and Lucy moved to Parker, S.D. after the death of her husband and Charlotte and her husband moved to the Parker area, too. I also would like information regarding the Lauterbach family from Emden, also. The family except for Esterdine who died in Germany in 1948 immigrated in the 1890's to Ackley, Ia. Geike Lauterbach married Aita Van Velde in 1856 and they had 7 children. I don't know who Esterdine married in Germany, but would like to contact relatives in Germany. I know a little more about the Lauterbachs than the Blocks and that name may have gotten changed at some time to Americanize it. I would like to learn about the Rechs and Van Veldes, too. Any information about these people would be of great interest to me.
Thanks, akscamry@hotmail.com
