Hello, For a change somebody from England looking for information about forefathers in Ostfriesland.I've obtained a vast amount of details about the family name TEMMEN going back to 1814 when it seems the family name was changed from WARENTJES (variants could be WARRENTJES & WARNTJES).
The line then runs back to 1729 where I've hit a deadend. We believe the name change was due to NAPOLEON stamping his mark on North Germany as he marched eastwards bringing town and parish councils to the area.
The towns I'am looking at are LEER, MOORHUSEN, BREINERMOOR, FOLMHUSEN, IHRHOVE, STEENFELDERFEHN and JEMGUM for both names.
There could even be links over the border into HOLLAND at the early years and immigration to the USA and CANADA.
Any info however small will be appreciated.

Hello. I am looking for any information on my grandfather and grandmother who came to the United States in 1909 and 1910 -- they both had the same last name (Gertz) -- Albertina Gertz Born 1891and Gustav Gertz Born 1887 and came from Russia Poland, but were Germans. They were both born in Margowa, Russia Poland near Lipno I believe. Albertina lists her home village as "Leibitsch, Russia" on her Ellis Island ship manifest and Gustav lists his as "Margowo, Russia".
Albertina joined a sister in NYC and worked for a time as a domestic before traveling and marrying in Johnstown PA where she met Gustav. Sabine or Sabina is the name of the sister in NYC. I am interested in the sister and other relatives she left behind (her mother's name was Amelia Petke, or Petky) and was married to Edward Gertz. Amelia died in the same year Albertina came to America (1909), but a sister, Emma, was born in 1900 and died in 1936. I am looking for information on Emma, her cause of death, and for any information on Albertina's family, how she ended up in Johnstown, and where her original family village is located.
I am interested in learning where both Gertz families lived before they settled in Margowo Poland and any information on the ancestors (Peter Goertz), Amelia Petke (born 11/22/1860, died March 9, 1909), Edward Gertz--Amelia's husband -- his parents, Edward Gertz and Caroline Gertz-- Edward had a brother Jacob and two sisters Caroline and Anna.. Thank you for any help.

I've been away from my Ostfriesland research for several months and need to get a "jump" start again. I'm trying to obtain information on Hinrich Hinrichs Andreessen's family including Cornelia, Antje, Dora, Claudia and Henry. I have quite a bit about their families once they arrived here, but would love to know more about their life in Hatshausen and when they traveled to US, and what ship. One source indicates they came in March of 1882.
Also looking for emigration dates and ships for Hinrich Harms And Metje Rieken Busemann Lütterman and their children Harm H; Wilminia H; Trientje H; Mareke H; Rieke H; Hinrich H; Tenges H. If anyone has any information on the Busemann family of Metje, I would also love that.
Also, anyone out there have information on Uebe (Dietrich Wieder) "Red" Ebeling born about 1830 in AMT Weener? He supposedly came to America in 1870s and married Geelke W. Anderson there. They lived for many years in Turner County South Dakota. Their daughter Tena married Ben Gowen. Not sure, but there might have been a son as well.
Thanks.

The names Ankesheil and Ankesheiln occur only in the USA but the Ankesheils came from Osnabruckerland (Wimmer and Rabber, now Niedersachsen) in the 1840's. My Dutch friends say the names is Friesich and my German contacts say that it is not German. The origins of the Ankesheiln are more in doubt but there is reason to suspect that it is a true variant of the other. Two alternate spellings are Ankesheyel and Ankesheiel. All 4 spellings occur in the chruch records in the US for a single person, my great grandmother, Marie Eleonor Ankesheil Wulf(mann).

I'm researching antecedents of Jacobus Klein m. Elisabeth Theisen in early 1700s at Catholic Church in Dusemond-Filzen, Rhineland, Preussen, Germany. I'd like to go further back than the 1700s.
Their son, Nicholas Klein (b.1735), married (spouse unknown) and immigrated (abt. 1758) to the Port of Philadelphia with his wife and son Pieter Klein. Afterwards, they migrated to that part of Virginia that became West Virginia during the Civil War. Their second son Michael was born in Virginia.
Any leads would be appreciated. I've gone as far as I can at the Mormon web site, Ancestry.com, Genealogy.com, and a number of others. Thanks. Charlotte Cline

Helllo, my name is John Frederick Harms and I am curious about how to obtain any additional family genealogy information. The best information I have is that my great great grandfather was Harm Eilts Harms. He was born March 27, 1823 in Thunum, Germany. I wonder if any additional information is available for parish records which preceed this information? Also, do you have any other suggestions as to how to try and trace my family roots back even further?

Hello, I am looking for any information about my great-great grandparents passage to America. I've looked through Ellis Island, the books called Germans to America..., and numerous microfilms but I cannot find them.
They are Harm and Elena Ottersberg. I think they came over around 1892 or 1894. I do know that they first settled in the Filley, Nebraska area. The article from the Boyken newspaper "Where Did They Stay" had two different accounts for when they came over.
One orbit said that Elena came over in 1884 and the other orbit said that Harm came over in 1892. That could of been possible considering Harm may have come first to start the homestead with his younger son.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you, Lesa Ottersberg

I will be visiting Leer, Ostfriesland in November, 2001 in search of relatives of my great grandfather, ADRICUS MARTIN JANSSEN. He was born on January 25, 1844 and left for the U. S. A. (Illinois) in 1866 at age 22. He is not in the Evangelical Church Records of Leer so most likely was a Lutheran, as he was in the U.S.A. A. M. changed the name JANSSEN to Johnson. A.M.'s children were in an obituary listed as relatives when Henry (Heinrich?) Johnson (most likely JANSSEN) died on Feb. 26, 1921 in Parkersburg, Iowa. Henry was born in Leer, Ostfriesland, on January 31, 1846. He had come to the United States in 1865, the year before A.M. Janssen left Leer. They both settled in Davis, IL and in 1867 Henry married Gertrude Huisenga. They had five daughters and three sons. One son COTTA JOHNSON OR JANSSEN had returned to Germany in 1910 where he died sometime before 1921. In 1877 the JANSSEN family moved to FORRESTON, IL and in 1904 they moved to Parkersburg, Ia. Henry's obituary lists relatives of Henry as Mrs. Jennie Krenzin, Lake View, Iowa; Mrs. Tena Janssen, Canavon, Iowa; Mrs. Lizzie Krull, Rushmore, Minn. He also had many friends from Ackley, Iowa, the obituary says. The parents of Adricus Martin Janssen were: GERHARD JANSSEN and SWANTJE GRUTER (or Grueter).

Hello, this is not a query but rather a results letter. I just want you to know that because of and through these Ostfriesan Pages, I have managed to make contact with two very wonderful people over in Germany. They both happen to have connections to the two primary towns I am researching, Beschotenweg and Rhauderfehn. To add to it, they are also both related to the two main familes; Venenga and Meyer! So, for those of you who wonder if this is worth it, I would say, absolutely! I just made a habit of checking the messages at least once a week, and that's when I saw Rhauderfehn mentioned for the first time anywhere! Thanks to those of you who keep these pages up and running, without them I may never had made what I wanted most; actual connections in Germany itself.

Hi from Canada: Looking for any info as to where my g.g.grandfather came from in Germany. His name Henry Joachim Runge found on 1861 Canadian census with wife Louisa, 2 sons John Henry & Charles. I have always been led to believe that they came from Mechlinburg. Along with them on the same census was Charles(42),Hanah(43),Mary(17) & Mary(75),also a Sarah born in C.West (3). All of these people still appear on 1871 Canadian census except the elder Mary who I assume passed away.Would like to know how they arrived in Canada & if anyone out there has any connection to these people. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Originally, I'm led to believe the spelling was RUNGE, but, later changed to ROUNG - but, until I find the birthplace, I cannot know for sure about the spelling. My g.g.grandfather was born in 1815 & his wife Louise 1818 according to their tombstone here in Canada.

Desperately seeking any info on Berend and Bertha's mother Johanna. Maiden name was Schulte or mispelled as Schultz. Was married to Christian Geerdes in Vellage but I believe she was from a nearby village Weener. I located her gravesite in George, IA with the last name of Groenwold. She supposedly came to America in 1861 but now I am wondering if she married a Groenwold before or after coming to America as Christian died of a gunshot would during the revolution. I believe they came directly to Freeport IL and later moved to George. Johanna was buried alone and there was no mention of Groenwold's in the Nachrichten obituary. If anyone can help me or tell me if this family could be listed in Dutch shipping records since they were so close to the boarder. I would be most interested to hear success stories with travel to US in 1861 from Vellage to Illinois. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

• I am searching for information on my Great-Grandmother, Hedwig Seidel. She was the mother of my beloved grand-mother, Ida Gilmore Craven, who lived and died in Texas.
• All that I know about Hedwig Seidel, for certain, is that she married my Great-Grandfather, John Wesley Gilmore, on February 11, 1864, in Washington County, Texas.
• I have heard from family that Hedwig Seidel came from Prussia. she arrived in Galveston or Indianola, Texas in the 1850's.
• I am so desparate to find more information on her. How I regret not asking my dear grandmother more questions about her parents. Now, she is gone. I found John Wesley Gilmore's parents graves in a small cemetery in Round Top, Texas. Next to them was the burial of an infant who was the child of Hedwig and John Wesley Gilmore. However, I have not been able to find the burial places of Hedwig or John Wesley.
• I hope that you have information on my Great-Grandmother, or can send me tips on finding more information about her.
Thank you so much, Joan Craven Louth

• Surnames are SMIT (Schmidt?), HOUSSEN, TAPPERS, WELMERS, MOREAUVAL. I am looking for more information about my husband's ancestors, the Smit or Schmidt family of Ditzum. The earliest ancestor was Meerten Broens Smit or Schmidt, who died in Ditzum on 15 August 1759, m. to Engel Haussen, who died 9 June, 1769. He may have been the mayor.
• Their son was Geert Martens Smit, a baker, who was born in Ditzum 15 April, 1746, died in Ditzum 25 March, 1802. Married Catharina Margaretha Tappers, who died in Ditzum 16 August 1792. She was the daughter of Leonardus Tappers and Anna Aleyda Welmers.

Hi my name is Lesa Ottersberg and I am trying to find a passenger list with my great-grandfather, Johann Harm Ottersberg on it. He came from Germany around 1890. I think he came over with his parents, Harm and Elena Ottersberg because at the time he was only 10 years old at the time. I think I have found his sisters, Elisabeth and Johanna's passenger lists. They came over on the ship Elbe on October 1, 1889 from Bremen and Southhampton, Germany to New York. The passenger list that I have found, though was in the Germans to America Passenger Books by William Filby. Needless to say I can not find this ship, during 1889, on the Internet. Can anyone help? • Once I thought that my great grandfather Sjoerd Douwes Bekius was the only member of the Bekius family who emigrated from Friesland, Netherlands, to America.
• He arrived in 1853, and settled in Ottawa County Michigan. He married and had 13 children, and some of his sons, including my grandfather, altered the surname to Bekins. But last year when I began pursuing more ancestral data, I discovered that there were also people named Bekius who had settled in Minnesota.
• So far I have not attempted to communicate with their descendants there. However, now that I have just found out about the Ostfriesians in the northwest part of Germany, it occurs to me that many ages ago there might have been a group of people who were all Friesians, some of them, perhaps, with Bek as their surname, which was made more elaborate during the Renaissance by adding "IUS" as a Latin suffix, and they would have lived along the North Coast of The Lowlands, before present political boundaries were made, and before the naming of Groeningen as that in-between Province.
• Based upon that theory, could that mean that there were families with the surname Bekius who migrated to Minnesota -- not from Netherlands, but from Ostfriesland?
• Could you tell me if you have heard of Bekius as a surname in Ostfriesland?

My great grandparents, Albert and Fannie Neuolt (Newalt, Newald, Neuold) Wieringa along with their 2 sons, Hiram, born 15 Jan. 1882, and Henry Hoy, born 5 Apr. 1883, came to America in 1883. Albert and Fannie were married 22 July 1879. The family always said that they were from Germany and sailed from Bremerhaven. I have a date-Nov. 1883, but I don't know if that is the date they left Germany or the date they arrived in the US. Albert was born 18 Apr. 1853, and Fannie was born 12 June 1855. Family stories also say that a daughter, Alcina (Alzina) also came over with them, but she died on the voyage. From their wedding date, I would judge she was probably the first child. They were said to have landed in New York, moved into Pennsylvania, and eventually came to Campbell Co., VA sometime in the 1890's. In Albert's obituary it said that he was born in Berlin and was a Lutheran. Fannie came from The Netherlands. Her obituary stated that she was born in Amsterdam. I tend to believe that the place names may not be correct, but are just places that come to mind for each country. The children who gave the information may not have known where they came from originally. Albert's parents were Henry and Elcina (Elzina) Harden Wieringo. Fannie's parents were Hiram and Edith Hoffman Neuold (or variations of that name).

The family from the time they came to Campbell Co. always spelled the last name Wieringo. I have never seen a German surname that ended in O.

I have actually not searched any places in Germany because I have not known where to start or how to start. I will be very, very grateful for any help that I receive in tracking down these ancestors.

Thank you
Yvonne Stone Slonaker

I am looking for information on the surname: Hecktor. My gr grandfather, Johann Hecktor, born 5/31/1832 came to Illinois prior to Dec 1853. The first record I find is his marriage to Elisabetha Mueller in Milstadt (St Clair County) Illinois. He and family later moved about 50 miles south to Randolph County IL where he died in 1893. Johann and his wife, Elisabetha, are buried at the Evansville IL cemetery. In addition, there is a Nicholaus Hecktor who was married to Johanna Oberle buried in this same cemetery. Nicholaus was born 10/19/1840. I am assuming that they are brothers but have no hard proof. I do not know there city or area of origin in Germany - only that they were born in Germany. If anyone can help me locate additional information, I would appreciate hearing from you.

s there a FRIES surname? I have not been able to trace my family earlier than coming to New York in 1849-1850. JACOB FRIES lived 1839-1922 and listed his home country as Germany. He came to New York as a young boy with either his father or his older cousins from a group of islands above Germany and settled in Sullivan County NY in a predominantly german speaking community. His family spoke Low German and had trouble communicating with immigration officials, probably the surname was changed to FRIES based on the name of their home region. Can anyone suggest a source of information to help me find Jacob (Fries) true immigration records and his parents from islands in the North Sea? Wayne Fries

I am looking for any information on my grandfather JON(John) GOETZ(Gertz) REMMERS, born 12 September 1857 or possibly 1858 in Germany. It is reported in his obituary that he was born in Bunde, Ostfriesland, Germany. Here he received his education, grew to manhood and married LENA CHRISTENS. In 1882 he came to the United States locating at Forrest, Ill.(According to family lore, his younger brother Henry also was to have come with them, and that he had served in the Kaisers army as an officer.) Later they moved from Illinois to Iowa where in 1900 his wife died. (They had a daughter Martha born in 1899.) In 1901 he married (ALBERTINA HASKEY SCHULTZ). My father Henry's birth certificate states that he was born at High Lake Twp. Emmett Co. Iowa. and his baptism certificate states that he was baptized at Forreston, Illinois. They moved to Wisconsin, residing in Clark & Columbia counties before coming in 1915 to Tomahawk (Lincoln Co.) where he died in 1924. Mr. & Mrs. Henry Remmers & sons George & Henry Jr. and a Mrs. G. Wichman of Freeport, Ill. were reported to have attended the funeral. I have been unable to find documentation of them in either Illinois or Iowa. Any help will be appreciated. Thank You.
