- I am resubmitting my query, thanks to a lot of people who caught my error. I forgot to put my grandfathers name in the query. His name is DIRK UPHOFF. He was born in 1873 in Ostfriesland and came to the US sometime in the early 1890's. He married Elsie Jibben in South Dakota and finally settled in Swift County, Mn. He died in l956. Since we are travelling to Germany in a few weeks, we would loved to have found the town where he was born. He did have a brother, Ralph, who also came to the US a few years after Dirk. There doesn't seem to be any info on him either. I have a picture of either my grandfather,Dirk or it could be Ralph in a military uniform in Germany. It has epaulets on the shoulder with what looks like the number 78. Thanks for any help. Carol

- • Since Ostfriesland used the patronymic surname system, it is usually futile to ask for a surname before about 1820. Any man whose name was Jann had children whose surnames were Jannsen. Thus, there is not necessarily any relationship among Jannsens; any man named Jann had Jannsen children.
• It seems, however, that some surnames endured through the patronymic period. I would appreciate knowing more about the surname system through the years, if anyone has any information about this. My maiden name, CAMPEN (sometimes spelled KAMPEN in Ostfriesland), has been the same since the early 1700's. Anyone searching for this surname? Marjorie CAMPEN Casterline

Godfather was: Gerd Buntkiel...&..Godmother: Rebecca Gesine Wenke and J.H.A. Wenke.
• Herman's Father was the INN KEEPER in ZETEL, however he was born in "Berne" just outside Oldenburg on the 8th July 1831 and he unfortunately died on 12th September 1866 at the Age of 35 years and before his son was born in Zetel. He was married to Bertha Gesine Hermine Wenke and on his Death Certificate, death occurred by "delir..und Schlagflub" which is WHAT IN ENGLISH?? I do not know if there were any older siblings of Hermann Hinrich Plate (junior), so I have been unable to trace information on the family from them. Hermann Hinrich Plate (senior) lists his Father's name as Fridrick Plate - " Landwirth und Heuermann zu Hannover, which I think is farmer/ Agriculturist worker in Hannover?? His Mother's Name was: Anna Rebecca ------------????. My G. Grandfather Immigrated to Victoria, Australia, in March of 1888 as crew on a ship from Hamburg, this Ship's name was either the "Elmira", or the "Elvira"
• He first went to Chiltern in Victoria, Australia, were he lived and worked as Barman at the Doma Mungi Hotel with Martin Wenke from Bremenhaven, who was born in Berne in Germany ( Also a Publican and owner of the Hotel). He also worked as a Miner in the Gold mines in North Eastern Victoria. He married in 1891 at the age of 23years in Chiltern, Victoria .
• There is a strong possibility of a connection with Martin Wenke and Hermann's Mother in Germany - Bertha Wenke, However I have yet to find it.
• I am seeking information on my G.G.Grandfather: HERMANN HINRICH PLATE and his Wife: Bertha Plate and there life in Zetel and any family that they may have had, as well as information on Hermann Hinrich ( Junior) before he immigrated to Victoria, Australia, in 1888. Anyone who may have information on the PLATE or WENKE surnames with reference to the above I would appreciate your assistance, especially the German side....Thank you....
