I have traced my roots as far back as my ggggrandparents (Meinert Ubben *1771-+Jan. 4, 1823 & Almuth Almina Harms). Meinert was a colonist from Großanderfehn. They had 3 children, Harm Caspers Meiners, Ubbe Meinert, & Gretje. I have quite a bit of info. on the children but have reached a dead end at tracing Meinert's roots farther. I do fair at reading & writing german. How can I reach a Genealogical Society in the Großander areas of Ostfriesland where I can get on a message board?

HI OGSA! Thank you very much for your help with my "Facharbeit"! By the way, you cannot really translate "Facharbeit", it is like an essay, about 12 pages, in which you analyse an interesting subject. I got "Emigration from East Frisia to America- " old world" skills transferred to a new culture" A family report on the basis of the book " When the wind blows" by Anna Wienke. 3 MAR 2001Betty Tovar (nee) Meyeraan bjtovar@yahoo.com Iowa
I have wondered if there are still Meyeraan family members in Emden Germany. My father, Carl, emigrated to the US in the early 1900's. I've often wondered about the pronounciation of Meyeraan in Germany because the double a appears to be quite unusual. The family here pronounces it as if it is spelled Myrun. Every time I visit a large city, I check the phone book for this surname, but Minneapolis is the only major city in which it has been found. I know many Meyeraans settled in Minnesota, but due to parent's divorce have very little information about my heritage. Thank you for whatever information you may provide.

Great site Lin!!! My family also came from Campen. The Eertmoed family lived there from about 1760-1890, prior to 1760 they were in Loquard and Suurhusen. In 1890 Fred A. Eertmoed and family immigrated to the U.S.A. and settled in Pekin, Illinois. In 1897 they moved to Alva, Oklahoma. They stayed there until 1905 when they moved up to Lanigan Canada and lived there until 1910. Most of the family returned back to Pekin Illinois. A year later my branch moved out here to Reedley, California. They seemed to move around quite a bit??? Am always interested in anything with the Eertmoed family and especially of what the origin of the name might be. It doesn't seem to be your usual friesen name. Mike Ertmoed

19 MAY 101Donald A. Ubben Ahntafel@flinthills.com Northeast Kansas
I have researched my roots as far back as the year 1771, i.e.: (*1771 Meinert Ubben +01-04-1823 & (*01-18-1775 Almuth 'Almt' Almina Harms). Recently, I have learned that Meinert and Almuth were married in Nortmoor. They had five children: (*06-07-1801 Heilke), (*01-02-1804 Moeder), (*05-25-1808 Harm Caspers Meinert +11-28-1879), (*05-01-1811 Ubbe Meinert +08-29-1879), and (*03-15-1815 Gretje +03-11-1906). I have quite a bit of information concerning the children, except for Heilke & Moeder, but have reached a stalemate researching Meinerts roots further. Please! Can anyone in the Nortmoor, Leer, Großefehn (Großanderfehn?), or Remels area help me?

I put a site on the web concerning the development of the high moorland or fen area in central Ostfriesland, the early settlings, the draining of the moors, so that peat could be cut and the land could be cultivated. Villages Vossbarg, Zwischenbergen, Wiesedermeer and Marcardsmoor are mentioned, also Strackholt, Spetzerfehn and Wiesede. Most of the pages are also in English.

I have been trying to trace may family. I have had excellent response to my Grandfather's side of the family. Can't locate anything on my Grandmother's side of the family. I think she was born in Pilsum. My Aunt is deceased and she thought they changed their name on the way over here. Her name was Hilda, she was born in 1866, and her Father was named Hillert Driesen, born in 1838, on his tombstone. My Aunt had heard stories that he may have been a Greek sailor named Hans or Haans. My Grandmother's Mother died when whe was young. I'm not sure if it was before they came to the USA or afterward. Her father remarried and had 3 other children, Drees, Will and Lily. Drees was born in 1883 but I'm not sure if he was born in Germany or the USA. Can't find information on the other siblings. Will was a professor at University of Or in Portland. Lily's married last name was Myers. She lived in Adeline, Il. I cannot find any records on her either.

I had attended the Ostfriesen Conference in July and had submited several names, like Geerts, Grass and Kramer. A few days ago I received an E-mail in response. It was a lady who looked for the same names. Well, it turned out, that we have the same far distance relatives and decended from the same Gr. Gr.Grandparent Gerhardus Janssen Grass and Rebecca Kramer. She decended from one of their children Lukke Bina and I from Toni Grass. I call that success.

2 DEC 101Donald A. Ubben Ahntafel@flinthills.com Northeast Kansas
$100. FINDER FEE OFFER I still have not determined who the ancestors were of my g.g.grandfather,i.e., Meinert Ubben. Meinert was born Abt. 1771, (Place unknown), and died Jan. 04, 1823 (Place unknown). Meinert married Almuth Almina Harms at the Nortmoor Evangelical Lutheran Chuirch on June 28, 1800. Almuth was born on Jan. 18, 1775 at Nortmoor, Germ., (Date and place of death unknown). Their first two children, Heilke & Moeder were born at Nortmoor, Harm Caspers Meinert was born at Großanderfehn, and Ubben Meinerts & Gretje were born at Stapel. I know nothing about Heilke & Moeder except their date & place of birth. Ubbe Meinerts Ubben remained in Germany and married Anna Wallrich Ubben. Harm Caspers Meinert (My g.grandfather) & his sister Gretje immigrated to the U.S. The children of Ubbe Meinerts were; Almina Ubben who married Harm Meiners Ubben (Harm Meiners married Christina Jurgens Buhr after the death of Almina & died in Fisher Co., Texas); Wallrich married Ellen Lymanstull; Rika married a Hammerschlag; Gerd Heiyen immigrated to the U.S. and married Lizzie Tuxhorn; Hilke immigrated to the U.S. & married Gerd Williams Jr.; Fraucke Anna immigrated to the U.S. & married John Friederick Giesman; and Margarethe (Unknown). I believe the surname of Meinert's parents was a name other than Ubben. I believe his parents names may have been Ubbe Heyen & Fraucke Tjarcks but I am unable to prove it.
