My grandmother is born in 1919 in Rhaude/Ostfriesland. Her name of birth was "Follrichs". Her oncle "Heinrich Follrichs" did emigrate to USA, probable to Auburn, NE. Unfortunately during world war II she lost all documents of her ancestors. She left Ostfriesland before 1940. Now,I try to find any traces in USA and in Ostfriesland. Back about 200 years ago,the cazrina of Russia invited German farmers to come to Russia, take up land there, and would be not subject to Russian military service. I am curious to know if there were many Ostfriese farmers who took "advantage" of the offer. We now know the Germans who took up the offer were later severely treated by the Communists.

23 JAN 2005Corleen Morris corleen4@comcast.net Colorado, USA
My paternal ancestors were from Remels, Germany. I have been to Remels and in the St. Martin's church records it is indicated that they left Remels September 15, 1852 in a sail ship by way of the North Sea, English Channel, Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, Mississippi and Illinois Rivers into Peoria, Illinois. Their name was Focken in Remels (sometimes spelled and pronounced Vocken here in America) but was later changed to Folkers. My gggrandfather and gggrandmother's names were Weyert Focken (Vocken) and Taalke (Garrels) Focken. They came to America in 1852 with their five children Vocke (my ggrandfather), Garrelt, Oye, Rixteand Anna. I am interested in finding the ship manifest of their departure for America. If anyone can help I would be most appreciative. Also, did Weyert Focken have any siblings that have relatives still in the Remels area. I would love to hear from you. My grandmother Grace Garrels was also born in Remels, baptized in the St. Martin's Lutheran Church. Her father's name was Focke Garrels. His wife Almina died in Remels March 14, 1873. Grace and her father came to America through Baltimore in 1882. I would also like to find their ship manifest and if Focke has any sibling relatives still in the Remels area. Many thanks for any help.

Hallo, some time ago I read about an US-citizen being connected with the Kannegießer-Family from Flachsmeer (a village near Leer). Today I was looking for his homepage, but I was not successful. I can add to his genealogy that my grandmother was Ella Martha Kannegießer, born on 19.9.1894 (daughter of Wemke Körte and Nantje Kannegießer). My grandmother was married with Jan Claaßen Eden (2.4.1887 - to 6.9.1928)and had 3 sons (one of them may father Johannes Wilhelm Nantje Eden (he died 1989). If there is a possibility to contact that man in question, I would be very grateful. With best wishes from Germany: Erika

I've been doing genealogy on my own family for a while now and thought it would be nice to do it on my step-dad's family for a Christmas present for him. Needless to say, it is quite difficult when you are dealing with the German names, especially if they "Englishized" them after they immigrated. I am trying to trace a Nanninga family. Tena (Nanninga) Cornish was born in Feb of 1887 to Frerk and Hannah (Diehardt) Nanninga. I believe that Frerk immigrated to the US in 1870 and Hannah in 1874. If I have the correct family, they married in 1879 in Illinois. However, the problem is all the Nanninga families in Illinois and they ALL have the same sorts of names. Anyway, it's a challenge, but I love playing detective!

HI! We've been doing some research on names. I was very close with my great-grandmother and she always wanted me to name my child after her mother, who came from Germany. Her maiden name was Olthoff and we are now searching for the spelling of her middle name as we are expecting and would like to use the name for our child. Her middle name was "Bovene" and it's not listed on her marriage licence and her birth certficate is in Eastfriesland Germany - so we really are unaware of how to spell it. Any suggestions? We'd appreciate it!

I'm trying to find the origin of my east friesian name, "Gertjejanssen". I've traced it back to about 1750. Sometimes it has been hyphenated.

Hi! Distant relatives of our family emigrated to the US in the 1850s. Their names were Weert Freese an his wife, nee Heeren from Rhaudermoor. One of their sons was called Asjen. My mother has got a picture with a young woman and her children taken in the 1890s. It shows the mother and her two children whose names are Willian and Ethel. The woman is probably one of the youngest daughters of Weert Freese and his wife, the children their grandchildren. They probably lived in Grundy County Iowa. Do descendants still live? Please contact me. Jürgen Meyer, Soltau
