The Orphan Train Movement: Tales of Three Riders

Over 200,000 children between the ages of 3 and 13 were removed from New York City to the labor-short farm communities of Iowa and the Midwest between the years of 1854 and 1929. This movement alleviated a social service "problem" of New York City, and attempted to solve the labor shortage problem in the Midwest. We will investigate three case studies of Ostfriesen foster families, trace the children's lives lived and try to identify their birth parents.

Jill Morelli, Certified Genealogist, will host this session.

Getting ready to attend on-line sessions:

1) Visit Zoom.us and download the Zoom browser plug-in - it is free.

Click on the orange button (Sign Up! It’s Free!)  Accept the cookies.

Answer the questions!  When you get an account—you MUST keep track of your password!

2) You MUST register in advance since capacity is limited.   Please be sure to attend if you register since someone else may have wanted your slot.

3) Make sure you add the date and time to your calendar!  Zoom does not send reminders for sessions held in meeting formats.  Not all sessions will have recordings available after the session.

4) Please cancel your registration if you will not be able to attend.  We try to license enough Zoom users to cover our expected audience for each session but popular topics might reach our registration limit.

OGSA Conferences

We will be holding on-line meetings and educational programs until it is safe to hold our next onsite conference.  Additional details about future events will be provided on this page, in our quarterly journals, and periodic e-mails.

The health and well-being of our members is our first priority as we schedule future events. We will monitor conditions and look for new ways to help support your research.  Please contact us at Memberships@ogsa.us if you have recommendations.
